From 1st July 2015 it became free to call 0800 and 0808 numbers from your mobile as well as landlines under new OFCOM regulations. This is one of a number of changes brought in by OFCOM in order to make it cheaper and clearer for mobile and fixed line phone users, under the new ‘UK Calling’ initiative from OFCOM. As well as free calls to freephone numbers from mobiles, callers who use other 08, 09 and 118 numbers should find it easier to obtain cost information for calling services that use these numbers.
Under the new regulations the costs will be split in to two elements:
– The Access Charge – This is the cost of calling the number and is paid to your network operator
– The Service Charge – This is the element that is paid to the service provider who receives the call an is providing the information you require
To calculate the total cost of the call add the two charges together.
As a word of caution, calls to 0500 numbers are not currently free though.
If you would like to find out more about this, OFCOM have setup a web site at www.ukcalling.info/ explaining all in further detail.
